GIS Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Gaborone, Botswana
The “Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana’s Communal Rangelands” Project funded by GCF aims to utilize collective management of livestock and ecosystems to restore Botswana’s communal rangelands, increasing the climate resilience of vulnerable populations and reducing GHG emissions. Over 8 years, the project will undertake activities in 104 villages in Ngamiland, Kgalagadi, and Bobirwa landscape areas covering six administrative districts of Botswana. In these three areas, the Project is targeting improved management of 4.6 million hectares of rangelands.
The GIS Coordinator reports directly to the Senior GIS Coordinator and is responsible for maintaining and analyzing spatial data to support rangeland management decisions. This position requires expertise in GIS applications, statistics, environmental data analysis, cartography, and field data collection. The ideal candidate has a background in GIS or environmental sciences and will work collaboratively with project teams and stakeholders to deliver accurate spatial information and visual resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Spatial Database Management
- Populate the project database with rangeland condition data, vegetation cover assessments, and restoration site coordinates.
- Ensure data quality and integrity through validation procedures.
- Maintain accurate metadata for all spatial datasets.
- Execute spatial queries to analyze rangeland degradation patterns and restoration progress.
- Update project intervention maps as restoration activities progress.
- Process and analyze field data collected by rangeland monitors.
- · Produce maps and visualizations for project reports and stakeholder communications.
Environmental and Socio-economic Data Analysis and Visualization
- Analyze satellite imagery to assess vegetation changes and land degradation in communal rangelands.
- Create maps showing rangeland conditions, grazing pressure, and restoration sites.
- Map and visualize socio-economic indicators including beneficiary distribution, livestock sales, and income generation.
- Collect field data using GPS units, tablets, and other mobile data collection tools.
- Generate statistical reports on both ecological restoration progress and livelihood improvements.
- Compile and analyze spatial data on livestock movements, grazing patterns, and market access.
- Document project impacts through spatial analysis of both environmental and socio-economic indicators.
- Travel to project sites to conduct field surveys and verification.
- Support project monitoring and evaluation through integrated spatial data analysis under guidance.
- Provide spatial analysis to inform adaptive management decisions as directed.
- Assist in developing spatial tools for community rangeland management planning.
- Perform any other duties assigned from time to time.

- Supporting the staff in the implementation of other activities outside of its main responsibilities if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 2 to 4 years of experience in spatial database administration.
- Proven work experience as a GIS technician.
- Experience with GPS data collection and integration with GIS systems.
- Knowledge of modern cartographic standards and principles.
- Advanced statistical, mathematical, and methodology skills.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, SQL, Python, and R.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Geographical Information Systems, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, or related field.
- Professional Certificate in Spatial Data Analysis (Added Advantage).
- 1-2 years of practical relevant work experience with commercial and open-source GIS software and tools.
- Experience with geospatial web development and interactive mapping applications.
