The role of the Deputy Country Director encompasses a range of important responsibilities. As a key collaborator, this individual works closely with the Country Director to provide essential support and leadership in driving the country program in Mongolia. This involves actively engaged in strategic planning, supporting, and implementing effective conservation initiatives, coordinating with local stakeholders, managing resources, and supporting fundraising efforts. The Deputy Country Director will play a vital role in ensuring that the program is executed efficiently and effectively, contributing to the overall success of conservation efforts in Mongolia.

The Deputy Country Director serves as a crucial collaborator, working closely with the Mongolia Country Director to provide support and leadership in driving the country program in Mongolia.
- Support conservation program.
The Deputy Country Director provides support to the Country Director, in establishing TNC as a major conservation partner and defines conservation priorities within Mongolia. They may provide conceptual leadership and specific advice and guidance on the development, refinement and reporting on conservation strategies and projects, in line with TNC’s 2030 Goals. They provide strategic leadership and direction for the conservation program, including setting priorities, developing, and executing strategies, monitoring, and evaluating progress, and reporting on program outcomes. They engage local and key influential support for local, division, and global conservation efforts, negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and major institutions, to conserve and protect natural communities, and develop and implement cutting edge conservation strategies in a high-profile geography and major philanthropic market.
- Manage strong relationships with stakeholders.
The Deputy Country Director works closely with other regional and global conservation teams to foster collaboration, coordination and knowledge-sharing across different teams and geographies. They develop and maintain strong relationships with key partners, stakeholders, and conservation organizations to leverage collective efforts and achieve conservation goals. This includes developing relationships and frequent contact with key government stakeholders on matters pertaining to TNC’s conservation work.
- Oversee Finance, Operations and Human Resources
The Deputy Country Director provides overarching leadership and guidance that promotes operational excellence throughout Mongolia Business Unit (BU) and support the BU’s ability to accomplish its strategic conservation priorities. They ensure that the finance and operations team provide high level and accurate financial information on the health of the business and are responsible for the management, maintenance, and reporting of all financial data. They oversee annual budget development and monitoring, strategic financial planning, and the development of business plans. They provide guidance in the preparation and the presentation of regular financial reports and forecasts to internal (e.g., TNC management) and external audiences (e.g., donors). They provide financial recommendations in the overall organizational planning and implementation. They analyze and advise on all aspects of financial management and work directly with the Country Director to ensure the financial sustainability of the Mongolia Business Unit, while following the established policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Support fundraising efforts.
The Deputy Country Director actively participates in fundraising efforts by identifying donor prospects, cultivating donor relationships, and participating in fundraising activities. This includes working closely with the regional and global development teams to develop fundraising strategies, proposals, and donor stewardship plans to secure funding for the Mongolia Business Unit.
The Deputy Country Director provides vision, direction and consummate leadership across all communication programs, events and initiatives within the Mongolia Business Unit.
The Deputy Country Director reports to the Mongolia Country Director and supervises the Finance, Operations and HR Team.
In the absence of the Country Director, the Deputy Country Director will serve as the Acting Country Director
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years relevant experience, including working at a senior level.
- Experience managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
- Experience negotiating complex, high profile, or sensitive agreements.
- Experience in developing program-wide strategies and policies.
- Experience working with diverse groups of staff and partners.
- Written and verbal fluency in English.
Desired Qualifications
- 10 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team. Delegates responsibility and authority to staff and clearly defines expectations. Keeps staff informed and expresses appreciation.
- Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
- Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in conservation, government relations, fund raising and non-profit
- Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
- Experience directing a major program or project of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams and meeting deadlines.
- Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
- Experience influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans at the state or country level.
- Superb communication and presentation skills.
- Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Politically savvy.
